COLOSSAL SENSATION is a 2005 art house hit from veteran Hungarian filmmaker Robert Koltai (MAY DAY MAYHEM), a master of political and social farce. A deft blend of comedy and pathos, COLOSSAL SENSATION balances the tumultuous lives of twin circus clowns against watershed moments in 20th century Hungarian history. Born and raised in a gypsy circus somewhere in the backwaters of Eastern Europe, twin brothers and clowns Naphthalene and Dodo fall afoul of the local Communist Party when a joke goes awry. "Older" brother Dodo takes the fall for his hapless brother and lands in the gulag for the offense. Meanwhile, Naphthalene becomes a prop man for a rural theater and involuntarily sets in motion events that lead to the 1956 Budapest revolution. Amid the chaos, Naphthalene sets out to free his brother from prison, with an attractive young hitchhiker along for the ride. Playing the witless Naphthalene, director Koltai heads a strong cast that also includes Oscar?winning Czech director Jiri Menzel (CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS) as a theater impresario.

Hoping to shake up the complacent Italian Communist Party, a group of leftist radicals sends an incendiary letter to a major evening newspaper declaring their intention to volunteer to fight American troops in Vietnam as a political statement against the war. When the newspaper actually prints the letter, drawing public attention to the situation, the provocateurs face the hard choice whether their commitment to the cause is worth risking their lives.

Directed by Francesco Maselli (Storia D'Amore, winner "Special Jury Prize" 1986 Venice Film Festival), former assistant to Michelangelo Antonioni (STORY OF A LOVE AFFAIR, BLOW-UP), this searing black comedy is a brash example of Italy's celebrated "cinema politico." The cause of a scandal at the time of its release, the film was almost banned and Maselli's career nearly ruined. Despite its status as a cause clbre, OPEN LETTER TO THE EVENING NEWS has languished in obscurity, denying Maselli his rightful place alongside the provocative likes of Francesco Rossi, Bernardo Bertolucci, Gillo Pontecorvo and Costa-Gavras.
